Well, election is over. Barack Obama has been re-elected president. The Senate remains in Democratic control and apparently from the response of many Christians I've seen on Facebook and in some media outlets, our country is destined for destruction in about 12 days or less.
What has surprised me the most about this election was not the outcome. It was not how the candidates went at each other for weeks prior to the election. It was not the huge drop in the stock market the day after the election. What has surprised me the most has been the "Christian" response to the whole thing. Honestly, if you read Facebook in the hours following the results, you would think that Satan himself had crowned himself king of America. (I know, many of you just said "Satan himself DID crown himself king of America", didn't you? Very clever, really.)
My candidate did not win. I voted for Mitt Romney because his policies are more in line with my beliefs (however, while everyone calls Obama a Muslim, let's not forget that Romney is a Mormon). I simply think he would run this country in a better, more healthy direction for a number of reasons. I don't feel that Barack Obama is doing that or will do that. (And I dare someone to call me racist for not voting for Obama). But to act like God didn't see this coming (like so many have whether they admit or not), is idiotic at best. I read one person's post that said "Don't blame my God for this, because my God wouldn't put Obama in office!" Seriously?? Well, sir, I'm glad I'm not serving your god because your god just lost the election.
The bottom line is, no matter who gets elected president, as a follower of Christ my mandate doesn't change. My purpose of glorifying my Father doesn't change with Mitt Romney or Barack Obama. The Great Commission doesn't cease with four more years of Obamacare.
The response shown by many believers is gloom, doom, and defeat. So many are acting like (whether they admit it or not) this world is their home and this election is the end of it. Paul says we are aliens here, foreigners, sojourners, whatever you want to call it......we are passing through on our way to a greater Kingdom. But while we are here we have work to do. That doesn't stop due to who is president or what kind of health care bill was passed. Am I saying these things are not important? Not at all. But what's more important is that there are 5 billion lost people on this earth and 2.5 billion of them have zero access to the Gospel. What's more important is that there are 160 million orphans in this world. What's more important is that 30,000 kids will die today of starvation and preventable diseases. What's more important is that men and women in our neighborhoods are dying without knowing the love of Christ and going to hell while we protest with posterboard signs.
I am not overly concerned about the outcome of this election because it will not effect what I am truly put on this earth to do. So to the believer who is content with whining and moaning about the the next four years: SUCK. IT. UP. Instead of posting the next Facebook zinger, go share the Gospel with someone. Instead of telling your kids how this president is going to drive our country to hell in a handbasket, teach your kids how to pray for our president and his family. Instead of being a pharisee concerning all the sin in our country, go to the lost and tell them you know the One who can break their bondage to sin. Do something for the Kingdom!!!
All this being said, I AM still proud to be an American. I AM still thankful to live here. And I still LOVE this country.
Josh
